Moscow to St. Petersburg — Night Train vs. Private Chauffeur

April 28, 2026 · 7 min read · FFGR Russia VIP Team

The Moscow-St. Petersburg corridor is Russia's most-travelled intercity route and one where the choice of transport genuinely reflects the nature of the visit. Five options exist for the VIP traveller: the Sapsan high-speed train, the Krasnaya Strela overnight sleeper, a private chauffeur on the M10 highway, a domestic helicopter, or private aviation. Each serves a different requirement. This guide maps the decision.

01

The Sapsan — 4 Hours at 250 km/h

Sapsan (Сапсан, meaning 'Peregrine Falcon') is Russia's Velaro high-speed train, operating up to 14 daily services between Moscow Leningradsky Station and St. Petersburg Moskovsky Station. Journey time: 3h45 to 4h10 depending on the service. Business class (the Sapsan 1 cabin) offers wider seats and a meal service. First class adds a dedicated carriage with curtained compartments and additional service.

For FFGR clients, the Sapsan is the preferred intercity option when the traveller requires a fixed schedule and wishes to work en route. The train departs and arrives in the city centre at both ends — eliminating airport access time. FFGR provides a vehicle and driver at Leningradsky Station in Moscow for departure, and a dedicated vehicle at Moskovsky Station in St. Petersburg for arrival. No airport, no security queue, no luggage restrictions.

02

The Krasnaya Strela — The Night Train Option

The Krasnaya Strela ('Red Arrow') is Russia's most famous overnight train, operating a single nightly service departing Moscow at 2355 and arriving St. Petersburg at 0755 — a 8-hour overnight transfer that converts a night into a transfer. The train carries a range of accommodation including private compartments (SV class) that provide privacy equivalent to a mid-range hotel room and are bookable exclusively.

The Krasnaya Strela is appropriate for principals who are comfortable with train travel, wish to preserve the following day's productivity from the first hour, and prefer to avoid air travel entirely. FFGR provides station transfer service at both ends. The principal's luggage is handled directly to the compartment — no queuing, no luggage drop.

03

Private Chauffeur — The M10 Highway (9 Hours)

The M10 highway connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg is 707 km of largely straight-line motorway traversing the Tver and Novgorod oblasts. In a comfortable vehicle with a professional driver, the journey takes 8.5 to 10 hours depending on traffic, rest stops, and road conditions. For principals who value the ground experience — the landscape between the two capitals is significant in its own right — the road option has genuine merit.

FFGR Russia equips the M10 vehicle with provisions for the full journey: water, refreshments, mobile office capability (portable Wi-Fi, charging), and a pre-planned comfort stop at an appropriate facility at the midpoint. The driver is fully briefed on the route, rest stop options, and any intermediate stops the principal wishes to add (Tver, for example, is 2 hours from Moscow and contains a restored Kremlin). A two-driver rotation is available for principals who wish to maintain road speed throughout.

04

Domestic Helicopter — 1 Hour 20 Minutes

Helicopter transfer between Moscow and St. Petersburg requires approximately 1h20 at cruising altitude, city helipad to city helipad. Practical constraints: weather dependency (the Leningrad oblast is frequently overcast), aircraft availability at short notice, and the absence of a direct central helipad in St. Petersburg — transfer from the nearest suitable pad to the city centre adds 20 to 40 minutes each end.

Helicopter transfer is most appropriate for principals with tight schedules who have confirmed access to a helipad at the destination, or for corporate events where the aircraft itself is part of the arrival statement. FFGR Russia coordinates the aviation leg through certified partner operators and provides full ground transfer on both ends.

05

Private Aviation — 55 Minutes, Full Flexibility

Private jet between Moscow (VKO, SVO, or DME private terminals) and St. Petersburg (Pulkovo Business Aviation) takes approximately 55 minutes at altitude. The practical advantage over helicopter is range of aircraft types, greater reliability in adverse weather, and the ability to carry more passengers and luggage without constraint.

For FFGR Russia clients, private aviation is the option when time is the primary variable and cost is not a constraint. We coordinate the aviation booking through our aviation desk, manage ground logistics at both FBOs, and provide a single point of contact for the full journey — aircraft departure to hotel arrival.

06

The Decision Matrix — Which to Choose

Fixed schedule + city-centre start and finish + prefer to work en route: Sapsan. Overnight departure + no airport preference + next-day productivity from 0800: Krasnaya Strela. Value the journey + multi-passenger + intermediate stops possible: M10 chauffeur. Absolute minimum time + confirmed helipad access: helicopter. Maximum flexibility + weather resilience + multiple passengers: private aviation.

FFGR Russia manages all five options and can coordinate a mixed-mode journey — for example, Sapsan Moscow to St. Petersburg, private charter return. Contact our concierge team with your schedule to receive a full comparison with current pricing.
